Having finally secured my visas, I was excited to (finally!) join the Panormos Project out in the field. The day got off to a bit of a rough start with the team still waiting for breakfast to be served when Anja and Toby arrived to pick us up at 6:30. Luckily, the later timing offered a spectacular view of the sunrise over the [?] mountains as Team A crested the first hill walking towards the day’s survey area south of the archaic necropolis. (It is worth noting that this sunrise view also appears to be a favorite of the locals, as right before second breakfast we happened upon two couches in a ploughed field directly aligned with the sunrise, complete with several empty beer bottles.) As a newcomer, it was a bit awkward surveying with what has become a cohesive and well-oiled team, but it did not take too long to grasp the standard procedure and incorporate myself into the group, although I imagine I may still be a bit slower than the others at this point.
Visibility issues, however, remain something to be mindful of. Having spent the previous day in the depot, I had noticed a dominance of red-coloured ceramics brought back from the field. In itself, this is an unsurprising observation for a survey project. Given the contrast with the surrounding brown soil and green vegetation, red-coloured ceramics are simply easier to spot than other ceramics. Considering the periods of likely occupation for this area and their characteristic darker wares, it is thus good to be aware of what kind (and how many) possible sherds we may be missing as surveyors. This is especially true since there appears to be a perplexing lack of finds from periods we know had local occupation (e.g., Roman, medieval, etc.). Of course, these biases, along with problems related to the lasting nature of certain ceramic materials over others, depositional practices, etc., are all common issues to expect when employing survey methodology.
Overall, the experience today was a positive one, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including Samos, the Temple at Didyma, the lighthouse near Monodendri(?), Panormos harbor, and the nearby mountains throughout most of the day. Most of the tracts surveyed consisted of ploughed fields interspersed with patches of maquis, and those in the field remained in pretty good spirits, despite a few tumbles down hillsides. At one point, the team assumed that Michael had been lost to the maquis, but just as all hope was about to abandoned, he emerged triumphant, if not a bit scarred, providing strength and encouragement to all to soldier on until lunch. Particularly promising for future research are the tracts surveyed west of the road, just after lunch. Sherd and tile* counts of moderate density indicate that this may have been a farmstead worthy of further exploration.**
*Two painted tiles were collected as samples from the last tract of the day (3476).
**ETA: What a difference a day makes. Having come across the area of high sherd density in the last tracts on Wednesday through the olive groves on the eastern side of the road, it is clear that these “promising” counts are relatively small by comparison.

Bugün çalışmalara 3375 numaralı alanda saat 7.00 sularında başlandı. (NS, TW, ML, CP, ÇÇ, BK, HE) 7 kişi olarak tek bir ekip halinde çalışmaları sürdürdük. Öğle yemeği öncesinde günün önemli buluntusu olan Pithos parçalarına Çağatay rastladı. Öğle yemeği sonrasında ise yaptığımız alanda önemli Stroter parçalarına rastladık. Bugün çok fazla zorlu arazilerde tarama yaptık. Genellikle dik yamaçlarda makilerin içerisinde yürüdük. Buna rağmen gün içersisnde yaklaşık 52 alanda çalıma yaptık. Oldukça zor bir gündü. Tüm ekip ağaçlardan ve dikenlerden nasibini alarak yaralandı:) Çalışmalar 14.30 da sona erdi
Bugün aramıza Lindsay katıldı fakat uzun bir yolculuktan geldiği için arazide bizimle değildi. Anja ve Bilge hoca depoda çalışmalarını sürdürdü. Ayrıca biz bugün malesef arazide bir köpeğin silahla öldürüldüğünü duyduk. :(

İkinci tatil günü planımız Klazomenai Antik Kentini gezmekti. Bu sebeple pazar günü sabahı saat 9.00'da hareket ettik. Erken çıkmamızın sebebi yolun yaklaşık iki buçuk üç saate yakın sürmesiydi. Planladığımız saatte otelden ayrıldık. İlk durağımız kazı evi oldu. Oradan Bilge Hoca ve kazı evinden bize gezi için katılan iki kişiyi de alarak yola çıktık. Arabayı Anja kullandı. Haftanın verdiği yorgunluktan olacakki ekip giderken uyuyarak yola devam etti. Anja bizi tam vaktinde gideceğimiz yere ulaştırdı. Kazı evine vardığımızda bizi Yaşar Hoca ve Elif Hoca ile kazı ekibi karşıladı. Hocamın arkeolojiye başladığı yeri görmek benim için ilginç bir deneyim olacaktı ve oldu da. Biraz dinlendikten sonra Yaşar Hoca ve Elif Hoca eşliğinde ilk önce Limantepe ve daha sonra işliklerin bulunduğu kazı alanlarını ziyaret ettik. Yaşar Hoca alanları detaylı bir şekilde bizlere anlattı. Kazı alanlarını ziyaretimiz bittikten sonra öğle yemeği için tekrar kazı evine doğru hareket ettik. Ama bu esnada Michael güneşten dolayı biraz rahatsızlandı. Kazı evine vardığımızda bizleri çok güzel yemekler bekliyordu. Yemekten sonra biraz sohbet ettik. Anja ise araba kullanacağı için kısa bir süre dinlenmek istedi. Daha sonra vakit kaybetmeden kazı evini, depolarını ve laboratuvarı gezdik. Yaşar Hoca alandan gelen malzemeleri ve seramik buluntuları gezdiğimiz alanları da tarif ederek açıkladı. Son durağımız ise kurtarma kazısı tamamlanan bir nekropolis alanı oldu. Bu alanı da gezdikten sonra yola çıktık. Akşam Didim'de ekip yemeği vardı ve biraz gecikmeli de olsa yetişmeyi başardık. Ancak herkes yorgun olduğu için fazla duramadık. Yemeğe Michael rahatsız olduğu için katılamadı. Hem arkeolojik açıdan hem de tatil gününü değerlendirme açısından dolu dolu geçen bir gün olduğunu düşünüyorum. Oldukça verimli geçirdiğimiz bir gezi daha böylelikle bitmiş oldu.
The team was split between the excavation house and the hotel work room today. Anja took Cem, Birce, Çağatay and Hazal for finds processing at the excavation house, while Toby, Néhémie and Michael stayed at the hotel to work on the computers; Yannis went in the van up to the excavation house where he was treated to guided tours, including that of Tavşan Adasi.
In the workroom, Toby first of all showed Michael how the project data was stored digitally, and also how ODK Collect had been configured for the project. Meanwhile, Néhémie got to work on preparing the background map image for the data presentation, and also on writing an explanatory ‘manual’ for how he was working in R.
Michael then used ArcGIS to draw in and label the tracts which we had walked in the past few days. When he had finished, Toby configured Git so that Michael could commit the changes to the survey file, via Toby’s machine. Despite Toby’s technical wizardry, there were a few digital hiccups, which took time from both Toby and Néhémie to sort out.
Once Toby had uploaded the walker data from ODK Collect to his machine, and then pushed it to Git, Néhémie was able to process the most recent result into the distribution map. It looked great, and it was very exciting to see the results of our sun-scorched wanderings come together! (spoiler: self-promotion!) Look at the output of this crazy map done with R! It is reproducible and everyone can tweak it.
Tea and coffee were the morning’s fuel, but alas there was no simit to munch…
Despite the later than usual start (7:00a.m.), the team were still up early today. Michael couldn’t sleep past 5:00a.m. so took a shower and got on with some work, but in doing so woke Néhémie…oops! The two reconciled over breakfast.
Bugün ben rahatsızlandığım için sahaya çıkamadım. Bu nedenle Anja beni yanına alarak, depoya götürdü. Ancak çizim yapmayı yeni öğrendiğim için bu işi daha iyi bilen Hazal'ı da yanımıza aldık.İlk önce 10-9 Eylül'den kalma buluntuları track numaralarına göre sıraladık. Ardından hemen çizimlere başladık. Toplamda yaklaşık 8-10 adet çizim yaptım. Daha sonra Hazal bana Munsell kataloğundan seramik hamurunun rengini bulmayı öğretti. Anja da çizimlerimizi sık sık kontrol etti. Biz depoda bunları yaparken ; Çağatay, Cem, Michael, Nehemie ve Toby alanda çalışmalara devam etti. Saat 14:00 gibi kazı evine geldiler. Erken gelmelerinin sebebi öğlen yemeklerini yememeleriymiş. Kazı evinde sandviçlerini yedikten sonra 14:30'da depodan ayrıldık.
Bugün depoda çok güzel zaman geçirdi. Alandaki sıcak ve yorgunluktan sonra, depoda çalışmak çok iyi geldi. Ve iyi işler çıkardık. Yine de çok sıcak birgündü.
The tract crack team worked hard today: we walked over 50 tracts in the heat, without a lunch break! The day begin in the harbour area, surveyed in the interests of completeness, rather than because there was any particularly interesting material turning up in this location. We then continued past the potential ‘farmstead’ where Çağatay spotted the architectural features of a potential terrace wall and a cylindrical stone. He spoke with a friendly farmer, who pointed out an (Ottoman?) well in the middle of one of his fields.
After the break, we continued east, surveying a large rubbish dump area. This was the most challenging part of the day, as the heat was becoming intense, and there was very little to see apart from a few fragments of modern tile. We then mountaineered up a rather steep slope towards an area previously surveyed, so that the two locations will form a continuous area on the data presentation. At the top of the hill we all decided to keep working and finish early instead of taking a lunch break - the adrenaline must really have been running!
Toby took us down another cliff edge ('be careful not to slip, guys’) across another field of potential interest, and up another hill. It must have been the heat/hunger/dehydration, but at the top of the hill Toby made the crazy suggestion that we walk two more tracts…the motion did not carry, and instead we finished for the day just after 1:30p.m.
The friendly farmer brought us over some figs while we were sat having our break! He sat with us a while and was interested in seeing our maps and asking about what we were doing.

Bugün çalışmalara iki ekip olarak devam ettik. Anja, Toby, ben ve aramıza dün katılan Yannis bir ekibi, diğerleri ise bir diğer ekibi oluşturduk. Öğleye ka- dar böyle devam eden çalışmalar, öğle yemeğinin ardından bir ekip ile devam etti. Anja, Hazal ve Birce çalışmalarını depoda devam ettirdiler.
Bu adama ayrı bir parantez açmak gerekli sanırım. Yannis Galanakis Michael'in hocası ve Anja ile Toby'nin arkadaşı. Ziyaret amaçlı geldiyse de bugün arazide bizimle çalıştı. TEŞEKKÜRLER YANNİS. :)) Akşam yemekten sonrada ekipçe (Anja ve Toby hariç, onlar kazı evindeydiler ve yoktular.) Altınkum'a indik ve Ali Bar adında bir yerde oturduk, sohbet ettik. Teklif Yannis'den geldi bu arada. “Pazar günü döneceğim, beraber vakit geçirelim.” dedi. Tabi ki geri çevirmedik. Müthiş eğlenceli ve pozitif bir adam. Güzel bir akşamdı. Bu arada bugün Hazal'ın doğumgünüydü. Oturduğumuz yerde Yeni Türkü çaldı sürekli. Hazal çok sever bu grubu ve belki ona güzel bir hediye oldu bu. Yannis'de çok beğendi Yeni Türkü şarkılarını. Yunan ezgilerine benzediğinden bahsetti. Daha sonra dinleyeceğini ve çok beğendiğini söyledi.

We continued to survey the same area as yesterday, i. e. south from the (excavated) necropolis. It was a sunny day, less hot than Monday or Tuesday with a welcome breeze. We continued with the same ‘crazy guys’ team as yesterday: TCW, NS, ML, ÇÇ, BK, HE. ML and ÇÇ mostly walked at the tracts’ borders with GPS and I (Néhémie) recorded the walker data in the ODK Forms.
I use this dailylog entry to present the first output made this Saturday with the software R (https://www.r-project.org/).
Anja and Cem (who came back during the morning) washed and drew the pottery.
Bugün araziye ilk çıktığımızda oldukça dik bir yamaçta 3150 numaralı track ile çalışmalara başladık. Toby, Çağatay, Michael, Birce ve ben tarama çalışmasında bulunduk ve Nehemie kayıtları GPS ye girdi. Bugün çalışılan alanlarda seramik buluntularının yoğunlu orta miktardaydı. Araziler anlaşılması zor haldeydi. Track 3150 ile başlayan çalışma 3178 ile son buldu. Havanın çok sıcak olması üzerine çalışmalara 14.00 sularında son verdik. Çünkü tüm ekip kötü durumdaydı :)
Yaklaşık 30 alanda tarama yaparak bu günü tamamladık.
Cem işleri olduğu için birkaç günlüğüne Ankaraya gitti. Anja ise çizim yapmak için Kazı Evi'ndeydi. O yüzden ekibimiz arazide 6 kişi idi.
The field team was NS, TCW, ÇÇ, BK, ML and HE today. First tract was at 06:55. Lunch at 12:30, continued again at 13:00 and left field at 13:40.
It was far too hot (reportedly 37 degrees C!) and humid but with a pleasant breeze.
Today we worked in the area to the west of the main road (i.e. to the west of Bim), on a hill overlooking the necropolis valley and in the valley immediately underneath (through which the main street to western Mavişehir runs).
The day started with an inspection by the police half an hour after we started tract walking. They had obviously been called by some concerned locals who thought we might have been involved in some kind of illegal activity, traipsing around at such an early hour. A friendly discussion and production of the relevant official permit quickly reassured the officers, but it did lose us about 30 minutes of tract walking.
Nice finds of the day included a foot of a fine glass vessel (which turned out later to be 1st millennium BC), and a whole pithos rim (original context unclear).
Unfortunately, we also found another apparent illegal excavation at the top of the hill near a water tower. The excavators seem to have tried to hide the trench by filling with vegetation. No finds identified from the inside the excavation itself (too much vegetation and backfill), but some finds in the nearby area suggest the possibility there might be an ancient grave in the vicinity, perhaps disturbed by this excavation.
Michael spotted a snake sleeping in a hole shortly before we left the field. We hope not to encounter him again.

Bugün tatil günü olduğu için Miletos ve Priene Antik Kentlerine gezi yaptık. Cem, Hazal ve Birce özel sebeplerden dolayı aramızda değildi. Onların yerine ekibimize iki küçük üye dahil oldu. Toby ve Anja'nın çocukları Alfie ve Tilly :) Öncelikle Miletos Antik Kenti ile gezimize başladık. Anja'nın rehberliğinde kenti gezdik. Daha sonra müzeyi gezerek öğleden önceki programı tamamladık. Bir sonraki durağımız ise Dilek Yarımadasında bulunan Karina adlı bir balık restorantıydı. Yemek ve Türk kahvesinden sonra rotamız Priene Antik Kenti oldu. Kenti Gezdikten sonra Osman Hamdi Bey'den kalma kazı evini de gezme ve görme imkanımız oldu. Kazı evinde yeni insanlarla tanışma fırsatı bulduk. Bununla birlikte Fikret Özcan ile karşılaştık. Benim için ilginç bir tesadüf oldu bu durum. Biraz yorucu olmasına rağmen oldukça faydalı ve eğlenceli bir gün geçirdik. Herkesin memnun kaldığı bir gün olduğunu düşünüyorum.
