The day when everyone was very tired …
After the conference yesterday, the team decided to start a little latter this morning, but everyone confessed that they had woken up at the same time as usual. This did not matter, however, as we then enjoyed a longer breakfast, with work starting somewhere between 08:00 and 09:00 am.
Toby and Lindsey went into the field in the morning to record non-walkable tracts and collected plant samples for isotope analysis. Lindsey took photographs in the afternoon and Toby prepared the botanical samples for further analysis by crushing them and hanging them to dry. Anja and Vera worked on the dating of the pottery by looking for additional parallels in the shapes and in the fabrics. I continued to work on creating new maps. My favourite map from today shows the walker lines color-coded by walker numbers and overlain with the diagnostic findspots.

It fits nicely with the barplot of the total number of tracts walked by individual walkers.

The weather was really nice today - not very hot, but sunny and not too cold either, even in the evening. Everyone was tired today, but there was a good ambiance and a lot of exchanges between all the participants regarding the results and possible future(s) of the project. Is there any chance for a survey in 2016?
Lindsey and I stayed at the excavation house for the evening while the Tavşan Team went out for dinner. We had a nice and simple meal with mercimek çorbası, some salad and Turkish ‘wedding music’ playing in the background.

Mysterious day
The cast:
- In the depo: AS, VS, LF, ML
- In the otel: NS, TW
Mood
Another wet day. Today was arife for urban bayramı and most of our Turkish team had already left Didim by this morning. Only Cem waited forlornly in the Atlantik reception area for an 8 am bus.
Though the weather was wet and our numbers reduced, our spirits remained high.
Some of us, however, (well, actually most of us it seems), had not slept well. Aside from the normal joys of “Brian” [1], there were other factors at work. A rhythmic electronic noise repeating every 5 minutes kept the Atlantik-occupying team less-than-well-rested. The speculation regarding the origin and meaning of this noise was intense. Did the hotel host (the friendly Sinan) have a secret washing machine where all the bed sheets and clothes were washed after all? (Unlikely.) Could it be an alien force experimenting on human subjects? Was there some maniacal hotel guest who took pleasure in switching on and off their air-conditioning units precisely every 5 minutes? To these question no firm answers were found.
The result though was tiredness. NS decided to up-sticks early from the Atlantik and head for the relative safety and quiet of the Didim excavation house by the evening.
Work
During the day, work continued on the two essential aspects of completion of the project work for 2015: (1) the finds processing and (2) the data work.
Whilst most drawings had been completed the previous day, they still needed to be checked for accuracy by the sharp eyes of VS. AS continued to try to give preliminary dates to the finds and assess the fabrics carefully. ML and LF joined forces to work on the serious backlog of find photographs.
Meanwhile, in the hotel work-room, TCW worked on data cleaning and finding information for the museum report. NS used his R-wizardry to improve the data visualisation.
They all lived happily ever after.
In other news
Zafer abi slaughtered a sheep bayram.
Michael reportedly ate kokoreç this evening, after an unsatisfactory hams dinner at the Atlantik
TW noticed that the team had covered an area of 130ha over the 3 weeks of intensive. This is twice the expected 60ha originally planned at the beginning of the season, and all with a smaller team than originally expected. Well done everyone!

- AS
- TW
- LF
- NS
- VS

The first rainy day
Today was the first rainy day. It started around 10:00 am and turned into a heavy rain after lunch, which was accompanied by a short electricity cut. Today lunch was celebrated at the excavation house, and I appreciated the home-made food. Eğlinize sağlık.
Processing the finds
Anja coordinated work at the depot: Vera, Birce, Lindsey and Hazal did pottery drawing while Cem took photographs. Birce, Hazal and Cem are leaving the project tonight or tomorrow. The team will be quite small after that :( Even if all the sherds are drawn, they must now be described and checked. There is still a lot work for the photographers* …
Processing the data
At the hotel it was a new day of cleaning and processing the collected digital data. Michael worked hard to finish the vectorisation of the walked track (he probably made about 6000 clicks per hour today) and Néhémie wrote Rcode to make new plots. Additionally, Toby helped to clean the data and prepared a list of outputs to be done during the week.

Cem ve Lindsay ‘in işleri bitince; Cem Çağatay'a yardım etti.

aka Michael’s Grumpy Day
Michael was super-grumpy today (sorry!). Contributing factors involved ripped trousers, falling headfirst into a thorn bush, and a craving for a meat kebab. The less said the better…

Defying Gravity
One of the more groovy (and unexpected) sights of the day was seeing a tractor driving practically vertically up and down a ridge edge. This area had been marked ‘unwalkable’ by the team due to its steepness, and yet the crazy driver didn’t see any problem taking his wheels up and down. The area survyed comprised the the 'bowl’ inside the steep ridge edges, the top olive-tree-strewn-plateau, and also a pathway past a villa complex and children’s play area. (Unfortunately the team were not given playtime, and kept working hard).
Breaktime was taken halfway up a hill, where we found a number of plastic chairs and a table - we really have found Stuff everywhere in the landscape! The morning snack was a plumb called Erik.
Personnel update
Unfortunately, Birce was ill today, and Toby was also unable to join us in the field. Best wishes to them both. Vera arrived today and joined Anja at the excavation house to work on processing our finds hoard. Good luck, there’s a lot to get through!

İt was quite extraordinary.
Güzel Bir An
