Project Panormos: Fieldwalker Equipment and Packlist
This is a list of items you should remember to pack with you for Panormos.
Before travel
Health
- Ensure you have appropriate Health/Travel insurance (EU citizens note, the E111/EHIC card is not applicable in Turkey).
- Vaccinations: up-to-date Tetanus and Hepatitis A vaccines highly recommended.
International participants
- Visa: ensure you have applied for and picked up your research visa in advance of travel!
- Money: for your arrival you may want to organise some Turkish Lira in advance (available from most bureau de change)
- But there are plenty of ATMs in the airports, in Didim centre and in Altinkum. This is often the easiest and cheapest way to get local currency. Check your bank account conditions of course (or change to a better one!)
Travel to/from Didim
- Tickets (air, bus)
- The nearest airport is Bodrum-Milas airport, 1h30 away; Izmir is around 2h. Private companies run shuttle buses between the airports and Didim for a cost (Love Tours or Gordion Travel who have online booking interfaces).
- Lots of bus companies run to Didim during the summer for the holidaymakers: try Didim Seyahat ; Metro Turizm ; KamilKoç ; Varan ; Ulusoy ; amongst others.
General essentials
- Passport (or kimlik ID card for TC citizens)
- Healthcare/travel insurance documents
- Any medicines or prescriptions you may need (there are plenty of pharmacists in Didim for everyday stuff, but some things may not be available easily, so best to bring your own stock)
- Driving license
- Money/cards
Essential field kit
- Good sturdy hiking boots & socks – (remember to wear them in beforehand to avoid blisters!)
- Long trousers – (to protect from scratches, ticks and snakes)
- Shirts/T-shirts (preferably long-sleeved for sun protection)
- Sun screen (50+ recommended)
- Good hat
- Any medicines you may need (e.g. for allergies)
- Good (daypack) backpack for field walking
Optional field kit
- Mobile Phone (but please see note on Fieldwalker Conduct vis-a-vis phone use on the project) - note: Turkish SIM cards can be used only for a limited time (2-3 weeks) with a foreign mobile phone
- Gaiters for leg protection – if you don’t know what it is, see Wikipedia: Gaitors
- Compass
- Photographic Camera (batteries, cards, film(!))
- Lightweight rain-coat/pac-a-mac
Leisure time (for those Saturday nights and lazy Sundays…)
- Beach gear/swim gear & towel (a lightweight Turkish peştemal is perfect)
- 1x Posh gear (shirt, long trousers, dress etc.) for evening out
- Lightweight warm jumper (e.g. lightweight fleece, it can get cool in the early mornings/nights in September)
- Sunglasses

Anti-homesickness luxuries (Marmite, moka, milk-choc hobnobs etc.)
