Project Panormos: Fieldwalker Handbook

Fieldwalker duties
Each team member will have a walker number, e.g. 003, to record the data they collect, as well as to indicate who picked up the finds.
Duties as field walker:-
- Pack ready for field: find bags, hand tally, ?compass, own supplies (own water bottle, food, ID/kimlik)
- Stay alert to archaeological material, fellow team members and the environment (human and natural)!
- Take care of personal and team safety, look out for each other.
- Be ready on time to leave for field!
Team duties (one person may be selected to be in charge):-
- Daily log/diary
- Team backup water bottle
- First aid kit
- ?Team camera, and photograph notebook
- Team lunchbox
Tract Leader & Tract Assistant duties:-
- Decide where tracts will be, find starting line, guide walkers in right direction
- Pack ready for field: gps, data-logger, tract satellite map & clipboard, spare batteries
- Maintain tract number list; record tracts on satellite map; enter tract data into data-logger
Working day
MONDAY TO FRIDAY
The rough working day:
06:30 – assemble at meeting point and leave for field with car(s)
on arrival at destination, set up and start tract-walking (2hrs)
09:00-09:30 – 2nd breakfast
continue tract-walking (2hrs)
11:30-12:30 – lunch break
continue tract-walking (2hrs)
14:30 – tract-walking finishes, return to base
sort finds, upload photos, sherd washing, type up field log/diary
17:00 – day finishes
SATURDAY
The rough working day:
07:00 – assemble at meeting point and leaving for excavation house
sherd washing, drawing, data entry (for finds), gis digitization of tract drawings, scanning forms
09:30-10:00 – 2nd breakfast
etc.
12:30 – day finishes
